British writer Kamila Shamsi of Pakistani origin refused to give the award

A German-based organization has refused to give the award to British writer Kamila Shamsi of Pakistani origin.  The organization has taken this step because of Shamsi's pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel stance.  According to the report published in the Pakistani media, it was decided on behalf of the administration of the German city of Dortmund to honor Kamila Shamsi with the Nelly Sox Award.  This honor is given in memory of the famous Jewish writer Nobel laureate Nellie Sox.  On September 6, the jury announced that Kamila Shamsi has been chosen from among the literary writers nominated for the award.

But, in a statement released on Wednesday, the organizers said that the eight-member jury has withdrawn the order to award Shamsi and now this award will not be given to anyone for the year 2019.  "Despite all the research, members of the jury were not aware that the authors had been involved in boycott campaigns in protest against Israeli government policies on Palestine since 2014," the statement said.

The statement said, "Shamsi's active political participation in the BDS (Boycott Disinvestment Sanction) campaign against the Israeli government's policies is clearly against the original spirit of the Nelly Sox Award."

Shamsi has condemned this decision.  He tweeted, "It is very sad for me that the jury came under pressure and decided not to award the writer who is exercising her discretion and freedom of expression."
